Småland in Stockholm.
The term “boutique hotel” has come to mean everything – and, in turn, nothing. But the newly opened Stockholms Stadshotell – boldly given a Swedish name, and a Swedish name only – offers a refreshingly authentic hotel experience by bringing back what boutique once actually stood for: independence, personality and a clear vision.
The name evokes the classic stadshotell – town hotels that served as popular meeting places throughout Sweden in the 1960s. Yet this new addition, created by restaurateur Johan Agrell and his colleagues, is less about nostalgia and more about exploring what personal taste – and, yes, comfort – can mean today.
There is a bistro, a dining room and a bar. There is the unpretentious, relaxed cooking that characterises Agrell’s kitchen. There is warm wood, set within a carefully restored building tucked between newly cool 1990s postmodernism and the constant buzz of Medborgarplatsen – a hub of hats, music and people.
A phone call from Johan Agrell marked the beginning of Småland’s return. Like a chef searching for just the right ingredient, he came across the original Småland chair – and immediately saw that it was made for the hotel’s bistro. We agree. And once the chair arrived at the bistro, it was given a new name: the Småland Bistro Chair. Robust enough for the countryside – refined enough for the city.
